As a new resident of Second Life New England, one of my first tasks was to find a house for my recently purchased property. After looking at the list of approved builders, I was happy to discover that I live next door to one of them. Better still, he happened to be standing nearby. I soon learned that Giovanii Fellini is a remarkably talented and artistic person, with loads of charm, good looks, and a great sense of humor! I recently had the opportunity to interview Gio about his Second Life experience.
Q. When did you first hear about Second Life and how long did it take you join after hearing about it? I heard about it when I woke up on January 24, 2007. My wife introduced me to Second Life after she spent a sleepless night surfing the web and came across a link for SL. She told me I had to check it out....so I did.
Q. What were your first impressions of Second Life? I was amazed at all of the things that were available to see and do in world.
Q. Have you had any bad experiences you would like to share? The only ones I can think of are the loss of inventory items due to "upgrades". But that's pretty minor, I guess. Q. Where is your all time favorite place in Second Life? The place we started, and the place we returned to, SLNE. Q. Are you really Italian? How did you choose your SL name? LOL...no. When we first joined, I had no idea what SL was about. My wife told me I needed to create a character... and I needed to choose a name. She had picked this beautiful Italian name (Gabrielle Gervasi)...so I figured, "what the heck"... I’ll pick one too. I choose Fellini, because it is one of our favorite Italian restaurants in Las Vegas. Q. Why did you choose to open your gallery in Nantucket, as opposed to other areas in SL? How long has your Gallery on the Square been open? Gayle Cabaret approached me with the idea after I created a candid portrait of her. We opened the gallery in June of 2007 which coincided with the opening art exhibit in the new Nantucket Square.
Q. How do you envision your 2nd Life evolving...what are your aspirations? I just like to wake up each day and see what is new in SL. I would love to see my homes sell so well that it could support us in RL...OK...someone pinch me...I’m dreaming. ;)
Q. Your photography is just beautiful. Did you immediately see SL as a venue for a gallery? Not at all. I saw the "studio in a box" portraits that were being sold in world and figured that I could do a better job so I started candidly photographing people and painting them to create a real art piece. Then we would present them in a custom frame to create something that wasn't available anywhere else in SL. The portraits were on display in our exhibit in Nantucket Square entitled "The Faces of New England". I got a lot of referrals from the exhibit.
Q. Now you're into building homes (and mine turned out wonderfully!). What made you decide to try your hand at building? How did you get on the SLNE suggested builder list? I saw the buildings that were available in SL and thought... "I can do that". So I just started playing around with building different structures. Then it evolved into homes that would look good in New England sims with concentration on good textures and prim alignment. After I had completed a few houses, with a little encouragement from Gab, I contacted Gayle Cabaret to show off my builds. After she saw them, she recommended that I be added to the approved builder list. Q. Which takes more of your time, photography or building? An average portrait takes me roughly 2-3 hours to complete. Some homes take me 10-15 hours to complete. My largest build probably took around 40 - 60 hours to finish...but it is a beauty!
