Flying with Daedalus PDF Print E-mail
Written by Almo Schumann

Daedalus is an attractive store on the corner of Grove and Main streets in Mystic Village. It's easy to be drawn in by the signs and tasteful décor, and a vending machine selling "Daedalus Cola." Feeling thirsty, I entered the store.

Daedalus is a design group run by Cora Ireman, which produces items ranging from lighters to boats and lighthouses to earthenware. One look at the shop showed me just how varied the business's offerings are. There's even a panel with a large picture of Cora on it, offering visitors a landmark for the workshops (Is this other stores or actual teaching?). I grabbed a cola (they're free!) and traveled to the "Hearthstone" workshops in Western Anteeles (check spelling?).

Arriving in the sun-kissed islands which are the home of the Daedalus Industrial group, it is clear why the business found a home in Mystic Village. Many of the buildings are highly-detailed New England-style wooden houses, built to the highest standards and with fine rendering. There is a lighthouse and even a choice of bridges!

I walked to the Daedalus Shipwrights' island to see what Cora could offer the sailors of the Islands of New England. The Daedalus 18, a sleek speedboat available in a range of colours and finishes caught my eye. It looks very trim indeed. Moored in the next two berths are fun-looking cruisers, one of which has interior seating and bedding!

Not far beyond is the Daedalus 11, another speedboat and, beside it, an attractive jet ski which immediately had me looking at my L$ balance.. Completing the Shipwright series are the Franklyn Cruiser and Runabout, also available in a range of colours. All of these items are presented with great care and an eye for detail and the design is superb.

I moved along to 0Daedalus Aerospace. Daedalus was famous for creating wax wings for himself and his son Icarus to fly with (the company logo is a wing). Lo and behold, there are some neat looking aircraft, ranging from a propellor-driven plane through to spacy and futuristic looking jets. All of these products showed the same precision and attention to detail as I had seen with the items by the sea and in Mystic Village. By this time, my cola was empty and so I decided to return to Mystic to take stock.

The mythical Daedalus was not only an aviator. Far more, he was an innovator and so it was clear why Cora chose that name for her wide-ranging business and design activities. Various subsidiary businesses, including Ireman Designs, which has its main store in Nantucket, show that Cora Ireman is one of SL's leading entrepreneurs. (Do we really know she's one of SL's leaders? By sales? By variety of offerings?). Seeing the empty can in my hand, I went for a fresh cola - I'd rather got the taste for it

As I traveled through the retail shopping district of New England, I stumbled upon a new addition. The retail sim of New England. Immediately my little avatar was drawn to the quaint Lavendar Cottage. Inside there was more than I could have hoped for to meet the country decorator's needs. Quilts that match the very essence of reality! The soft distinct colors automatically calm your soul as you imagine the pastoral scenery right outside the door.

I was so content after purchasing a rug or two, I was about to walk through the door and continue my exploration , when much to my surprise a little teleport button jumped out at me saying Lavender Cottage indeed had an upstairs. So I went to explore. In  contrast tothe downstairs, Lavender Cottage offers a full line of Role Optics eyewear. Something indeed for every avatar.

Black Dog ArtsThere's a shop on Main Street in Mystic that wants YOU! Black Dog Arts stocks a wide assortment of recruiting and public information posters from World War II. Rael Ellisson has also filled his two story shop with maritime art, nautical art, aviation art, railroad art, art Deco, advertising art, military art and War Bonds. Not confined to posters from the United States, Britain, Spain and Russia are also well represented.

Old-fashioned beer advertising posters and maritime paintings festoon the walls of the second floor, but Rael's fascination with World War II is also evident here. Photographs of battles and military installations, strategic telescopes, globes and an assortment of old maps are also available. It's not a far stretch to imagine that Rael Ellisson had a past life as a World War II propagandist in some country or another! So stop by Black Dog Arts for nostalgia and some historic perspective.
